If You Think Moving is Really, Really Hard, You're Not Alone!

Moving can feel like a high-stakes adventure, sometimes even more nerve-wracking than landing a plane in an emergency! A new survey of 2,000 Americans who moved in the last five years uncovered some surprising truths about the chaotic process of relocating. In fact, many Americans find moving more stressful than losing a job, switching careers, or even running for president!

Conducted by Talker Research and commissioned by College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving, the survey reveals that the average American has moved five times and expects to move three more times. So, why do people subject themselves to this moving madness? The top reason is to embark on a new phase in life (37%), followed by chasing better opportunities (31%), wanting to live closer to family (27%), and seeking adventure outside their comfort zones (23%). Some brave souls (19%) even move to start fresh where no one knows them!

But moving isn't all about fresh starts and new beginnings. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions! The survey found that 53% of movers felt anxious, while 52% were excited. Joy (35%), hope (32%), and dread (21%) also made the list. Interestingly, some movers felt relief, either from moving on to a better life stage (38%) or escaping toxic environments and people (25% and 24%, respectively).

When it comes to the nitty-gritty of moving day, Americans turn into superheroes, transforming the task into a 16-hour marathon with only two rest breaks! During this grueling process, they shed about 36% of their possessions. Fear not, though—there are plenty of tips to make your move less Herculean. Respondents recommend giving yourself more time than you think you'll need to pack (43%), decluttering (43%), asking friends and family for help (37%), and hiring a moving service (23%).

Nick Friedman, co-founder of College HUNKS, perfectly captures the moving experience: “Moving is like running a marathon while juggling—it's physically demanding and emotionally charged. It stirs up big feelings and old memories as you sort through your stuff.”

So, if you’re gearing up for a move, remember that you’re not alone on this wild ride. Take your time, ask for help, and embrace the journey. After all, moving is just another chapter in your epic life story!
