Laurie Shares Why Moss Is Her Simple Pleasure

For many years on the Laurie DeYoung show I’ve been asking about your simple pleasures. There’s enough bad news in the world right? So we like to take a few minutes each week to focus on the small things in life that make us smile. This week I chose moss. If I could cover my entire yard with moss I would. I have some but not nearly enough. Think about it, you’d never have to mow your lawn, it always stays green and it’s soft and spongy to walk on. Plus, you can imagine yourself living the life of a hobbit deep in the woods. I love moss so much I wrote a poem about it. I call it “Ode to Moss”;

I like moss, I want it for my lawn

Go with Kentucky Bluegrass and you’ve got it all wrong.

Moss stays green it’s spongy and soft, non-allergenic, it won’t make you cough.

No grassy knoll for me when I’m sitting underneath my tree.

Give me beautiful, lush, vibrant green moss, don’t want to try it? It’s your loss.

I don’t care if you’re the boss. You can get cross, toss your floss, call me Hoss or Ross, even Santa Claus, I love moss.

So this Sunday, St Patrick’s Day I might not be wearing green but you can bet I’ll be appreciating all the gorgeous green moss scattered thru-out my lawn. Who knows, maybe I’ll see a leprechaun dancing around somewhere on that cushiony little platform, no shoes necessary, which is another thing you have to love about moss.
