Shot-Putter Races Through The Hurdles After Teammates Injury

When you think of sprinters and shot-putters, the image you get will be very different. Sprinters tend to be tall and lean. Shot-putters are larger and more muscular. They're both trying to do different things, so it makes sense that they'd be built differently. A Belgian shot-putter had to switch roles recently and she's getting all the credit in the world for her effort.

During the European Athletics Team Championships, a Belgian hurdler couldn't take part in the race due to injury. Since this is a team competition, and every point matters, shot-putter Jolien Boumkwo took one for the team and ran the hurdles.

There was no doubt that Boumkwo would finish in last place. By the time she hit her first hurdle the rest of the racers were already on their third set. But she did it with a smile and was greeted at the finish line by her competitors.

Boumkwo earned two points for Belgium which she hopes will help her team avoid relegation. They currently sit 14th out of 16 teams, and the bottom 3 will be relegated to division 2.

My hat is off to Boumkwo for her sportsmanship and efforts for her team. It may seem like a little thing to run a race, but this was a big thing for her team and nation.
