Sunisia "Suni" Lee took center stage in all of our hearts during the 2021 Summer Olympic Games when she seemingly shocked the world and earned the overall gold medal in the women's gymnastics all around competition. She put on an incredible show and was all over our TV's and phones for weeks.
When Suni returned to the states, she made her way to Auburn to start her college career. She may not be in the public eye in the same manner, but Suni has been racking up the accolades. According to her bio on the school's website, Suni had the most decorated year in Auburn gymnastics history, including eight All-America honors and a national championship in 2022.
But it seems her time with the Auburn team is over after her sophomore season. Suni took to social media to announce that she needs to step away due to a "non-gymnastics health related issue."
"I have been dealing with a non-gymnastics health related issue involving my kidneys. For my safety, the medical team did not clear me to train and compete over the last few weeks. I am blessed and thankful to be working with the best specialized medical team to treat and manage my diagnosis. My focus at this time is my health and recovery."
We wish her well. I can only imagine how difficult this decision was. But health always comes first in my book.
As for her future plans...
"I will not stop pursuing my dreams for a bid to Paris in 2024. In fact, this experience has sharpened my vision for the future."
I hope she gets better and that we see her on the mat in Paris.
