Ohio School District Moving To 4-Day School Week

For years we've been hearing that study after study and research project after research project has found that the 4-day work week has enormous benefits for everyone involved. I don't think I've seen a single piece of information that shows any negative consequences, even from the corporate side of things.

I wonder if that's where this idea from Ohio is coming from. A school district in Ohio has decided to shift from the traditional 5-day school week to a 4-day week. The superintendent had this to say.

"You walk through the buildings and you can just see it in our eyes how tired they are."

It makes sense right? Teaching is not a 9 to 5 job. Many teachers go in early to plan because their days are hectic, then they end up taking work home. My wife (at the time I'm typing this up) is on spring break and she's spent each day catching up on work. It's not fair to them to have these expectations for what most of us would agree are not adequate benefits.

The plan would have kids in the classroom Tuesdays through Fridays with Monday being self-guided work at home. The teachers would still come into the schools on Monday but there wouldn't be kids. The idea is to give teachers that extra day to plan and get their paperwork done.

I love this idea and hope that other districts keep a close eye on this as it develops next school year.
