Man Sentenced To 18 Months Probation After Vandalizing Salem Witch Statue

A man will be sentenced to 18 months of probation after pleading guilty to vandalizing the 'Bewitched' statue by dousing the Salem, Mass tourist attraction with red paint over the summer.

The 32-year-old homeless man was originally sentenced to a year in jail, but a Salem district judge suspended the sentence on condition the man repay the cost of repairing the damage inflicted on the bronze statue. In June, a prosecutor said the man was 'going through a rough time and wanted to do something to get arrested.' His attorney said he had been living in a shelter for two weeks since his marriage ended, and had been looking for a new job.

The statue was put in town showing actor Elizabeth Montgomery as lead character Samantha Stephens in the 1960's sitcom sitting on a broom stick in front of a crescent moon. I've always thought it was weird to have a 'Bewitched' statue in Salem, but I'm not about to throw some paint on it.
