How Often You Wash Your Dog's Bowl Can Affect Your Health!

Let's be honest with each other. When it comes to cleaning things in the house, the dog bowl probably falls near the bottom of the list. I mean, the dog eats out of and they're going to make a mess anyway. Well, new research shows we should be cleaning it a lot more often. Not only will it help our pooch but it also helps out us!

How we feed our pets, store their food and wash their dishes can have negative health consequences for everyone in the household if not done properly. There have been multiple outbreaks of illnesses among humans after exposure to e. coli and salmonella contaminated dog food. But guidelines for how owners should safely handle pet food and dishes is limited. A couple of pet organizations teamed up to do a study to find out more information about this.

During an 8 day period, participants in the study were split into three groups and given different goals. Group C had no restrictions or instructions. The contamination of the bowls in Group C increased from the start and none of Group C owners had washed their dogs' bowls during the test. Groups A and B were instructed to wash the bowls after each use and were found to have much less food dish contamination. The pet dishes were washed with hot water or a dishwasher and was found to have a 99% reduction in microorganisms.

More research needs to be done but it's time to take care of these things for sure.
