Baltimore Native Andre De Shields Wins His First Tony Award

Many years ago, Andre De Shields made a promise to the city of Baltimore. He said that he was going to move to New York and become someone the city would be proud to call a native son. He's making good on that promise now after a major win at the Tony Awards.

Truth is, Andre has been making good on that promise for about 50 years through many roles on Broadway. But last night he won his first Tony Award for best featured actor in a musical. De Shields plays Hermes in the play "Hadestown," which won 8 awards.

The 73-year-old was the ninth of 11 children who grew up in West Baltimore. De Shields graduated from Baltimore City College before heading up to the Big Apple to pursue his dream. His first breakout role was in the 1975 play "The Wiz."

Congratulations to Andre De Shields for his amazing accomplishment in Hadestown, and all of his performances through the years.
