We got into a heated discussion on the show the other morning about whether schools should keep the valedictorian and salutatorian titles.
Personally, I don't think it's necessary. We've seen too many stories of brilliant kids taking their own lives because they've been under so much pressure to perform in the classroom. When we get to a point in society when getting a B on a test is cause for suicide, I think it's time to make a change.
It looks like Anne Arundel County has some similar thoughts.
The county board of education is considering a new policy that would allow high schools to select valedictorians and salutatorians based not only on grades, but also qualities like character and leadership. Board members who support the effort cite concerts surrounding equity and mental health. This is done in an effort to dismantle the class rank system...a system which students have called 'detrimental' to their mental health.
Not everyone is on board, though. What do you think of this plan? You can read more about it RIGHT HERE.
