Ex-Marine Becomes The First-Ever Double Amputee Full Active Duty Police Officer

Matias Ferreira lost both of his legs six years ago after stepping on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.  But he never let that injury stop him from achieving his life-long dream of becoming a police officer.

Ferreira was sworn in Friday as an officer with the Suffolk County Police Department in New York.

He is believed to be the first ever double amputee to become a full active duty police officer in the U.S.

Ferreira has a sense of humor about his situation.  When asked of his backup plan if he ever broke his leg on the job, he replied...

"If I break my leg, I go to the trunk of my car and I put on a new one and I'm back on duty."

Thank you for the inspiration!
