31 Years After Disaster, Soccer Ball Recovered From Space Shuttle Challenger Wreckage Finally Makes It To Space

31 years ago the world was rocked while watching the Space Shuttle Challenger explode during takeoff.  On that shuttle was a soccer ball brought on by Ellison Onizuka.  It was a ball from his daughter's high school soccer team.

Somehow, that ball was recovered, in almost perfect condition, in the Atlantic Ocean among the shuttle's wreckage.

Since then the ball has been on display at Clear Lake High School in Houston until astronaut Shane Kimbrough, whose daughter now attends the school, asked if it wanted anything sent up when he launched in October to the International Space Station.

Last week Kimbrough posted a picture of the ball, finally in space.  It took 31 years, but the ball had finally finished its journey.
