If I asked you how many Amercan's are actively taking care of our veterans, would you guess anywhere close to over FIVE MILLION? This is a conversation that I'm glad Chris Young has brought up based on these facts.
- 5.5 million Americans care for a wounded veteran at home. These family members and friends are known as "military caregivers."
- The Elizabeth Dole Foundation is the only national nonprofit solely dedicated to supporting military caregivers.
- Caregivers help their veterans in different ways, depending on their injuries. Many assist with feeding, dressing, bathing, getting to doctors' appointments and managing medication.
- Caregivers are rarely trained or prepared to care for a wounded veteran. They often suffer emotionally, physically and financially. They often become socially withdrawn as their care is required 24 hours a day, often for the rest of their lives.
- On October 19, the Foundation will host Heroes and History Makers, a celebration to honor military caregivers at The Anthem in Washington, D.C., with Tom Hanks, Savannah Guthrie, Elizabeth Dole, and a special performance by Chris Young. This is Chris's first time supporting the Foundation though he is a longtime supporter of military causes and has military family members.
