Grandfather Who Accidentally Dropped Toddler Overboard Could Face Charges

A tragic accident could get even more heart wrenching for a family from South Bend, IN.

The family was aboard a Royal Carribean cruise in Puerto Rico when the maternal grandfather lost his grip of his 1 year old granddaughter accidentally dropping her overboard. Detectives are now gathering evidence and trying to determine whether to file negligence charges against the grandfather who has been identified as Salvatore Anello. Anello, who is an IT worker, received glowing reviews from his boss calling him a "model employee."

Alan Wiegand, the child's father is also a police officer in South Bend, IN. The department said it offers its "sincerest condolences" to the officer, and asked the community to pray for the family.

According to CBS News, falling over is extremely rare. Since 2000, only around 340 people have gone overboard. A Royal Caribbean spokesperson also told CBS News it's deeply saddened by the "tragic accident" and its "heart goes out to the family."
