Walmart No Longer Carrying Cosmopolitan Magazine In Check Out Lines

In a press release Tuesday, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation explained its' partnered with Walmart to remove Cosmopolitan Magazine from the check out lines in over 5,000 stores so customers would not be exposed to its “sexually exploitative” content.

The NCOSE, formerly Morality in Media, argues that the magazine “relentlessly glamorizes things like public, anal, group, and violent sex to its young female readership” and that minors should be protected from such material.

Yet critics were quick to point out how removing the magazine in the name of the Me Too movement seemed misguided, counterproductive and opportunistic.

Cosmo is defending itself and while not commenting directly on Walmart's decision to remove the magazine from checkout lines, it did defend its overall message of empowerment:

“Cosmopolitan is the most successful global media brand for young women, with award-winning content produced by leading female journalists. With our focus on empowerment, we are proud of all that the brand has achieved for women around the world in the areas of equality, health, relationships, career, politics and social issues.”
