TMSG: Inmates Earn College Degrees At CA Prison's 1st Graduation Ceremony

A California State Prison made history last week when several inmates were able to accomplish a life goal.

The prison had a partnership with California State University, Los Angeles where 25 inmates were able to receive their Bachelor of Arts degrees in communication studies. Last week the inmates were able to receive their diplomas in a graduation ceremony. Which marked the first graduation inside a state prison from the California State University system. The students worked toward their degrees through remote video learning, connecting with instructors virtually.

CDCR Secretary Kathleen Allison told TODAY, "Obtaining a higher education in a prison setting through a partner like Cal State LA is an opportunity for incarcerated people to have a true second chance. There is no resource more powerful than an education, where people can gain new skills and learn new perspectives.”
