Shoppers have gotten used to free returns on items that didn’t fit or they didn’t want, but they may find it’s not an option anymore at many merchants anymore. New research finds that 81% of retailers now charge customers a fee to ship something back. Amazon is now charging $1 to return items to a UPS store instead of a Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh grocery store or Kohl’s, and Zara, Macy’s Abercrombie & Fitch, J. Crew and H&M are also tacking on shipping fees for mail-in returns. Some of these fees are much more than a dollar, including Dillard’s $9.95 return by mail fee, J.C. Penney’s $8 fee and J. Crew’s $7.50 charge.
