There’s been a recent article written on how you can “observe” Black Friday without physically going shopping. What’s striking about this is the use of the word “observe,” as if it’s a recognized holiday on the same level as Memorial Day, Veterans Day, or the Fourth of July. It’s none of those…it’s just the day after Thanksgiving where insane people go to overcrowded stores and beat the crap out of each other for overhyped deals on stuff they could buy online. That said, here are four ways you can “observe” Black Friday…and stay out of stores.
- Go On A Hike – Even if it’s chilly outside, it’s more relaxing than getting rammed by someone’s shopping cart in a store aisle
- “Buy Nothing” Groups – Millions participate in community-centered giving groups rather than dealing with shopping madness
- Learn Something – Take the opportunity to start that online language class or whatever else you’ve been thinking about and make yourself smarter
- Native American Heritage Day – On many calendars, this is a day that’s been marked for the day after Thanksgiving…and it just feels like something that might be more appropriate for the season than driving yourself crazy in a store
