The airplane seat recline button may soon go the way of the airplane smoking section – extinct. The main reason is a reclining seat is a cost for airlines. First, the pivot mechanism that allows a seat to recline is a mechanical device that needs maintenance. Second, its weight adds up, meaning the plane uses more fuel because it’s heavier with those devices. Third, airlines often have to deal with passengers who argue about whether seats should recline at all.
Now, manufacturers are making pre-reclined seats that are already at a bit of an angle, but lacks any mechanism for passengers to adjust seats themselves.
