It's no secret that Kacey Musgraves is wildly talented considering her first three albums Same Trailer, Different Park, Pageant Material, and Golden Hour have ALL been nominated for Best Country Album at the GRAMMYs (Same Trailer, Different Park and Golden Hour both took home the award)...but her fourth studio album star-crossed will not be able to follow in their footsteps. Why? Because the Recording Academy has deemed it ineligible to be considered for the country music category.
Instead, star-crossed will be considered for the pop category's Pop Vocal Album.
Rolling Stone Country shared that they received this information via email from Cindy Mabe, President of Universal Music Group Nashville, to the Recording Academy.
“This decision from the country committee to not accept star-crossed into the country albums category is very inconsistent and calls into question the other agendas that were part of this decision,” she wrote. "...the system is broken and sadly not just for Kacey Musgraves but for our entire genre because of how these decisions are made for music’s biggest stage. Building roadblocks for artists who dare to fight the system is so dangerous and against everything I think the Grammy’s [sic] stand for.”
The Recording Academy has not responded to Rolling Stone's request for commentary.
