First dates can be anxiety-inducing because there’s so much to worry about, from what to wear to what to say to where to go. Going out to dinner is common on first dates, but that just adds one more thing to worry about … what to eat. And it turns out, your date may be paying closer attention to your order than you realize.
According to one study, 40% of people are looking for someone who’s passionate about food, but 38% admit fussy eaters are a turn-off. The research shows the safest foods to order on a first date include pizza, burgers and salad, and there are some dishes that you may want to avoid. These are the foods you shouldn’t order on a first date, if you’re hoping to score that goodnight kiss or a second date.
- Anything too garlicky - You don’t want your deadly garlic breath to be the reason your date won’t get close to you after dinner.
- Onions - Especially the raw red ones, which can also lead to lethal breath, and French onion soup because there’s not really a graceful way to eat all that melted cheese with someone looking at you and making small talk.
- Pho or ramen - The mess is the issue here, but beyond the slurping and the threat of getting liquid down your chin or shirt, the steam from the hot bowl can also mess up your hair or makeup.
- Buttered noodles - These fall into the fussy eater category and it’s a good idea to steer clear of any items from the kids’ menu altogether.
- Wings or ribs - It doesn’t get much messier than either of these. Plus, do you want the person that you’re on a first date with to be watching you polish off your flat wings? There’s just no way to look good doing it.
- Salad - The study gives it a thumb’s up, but there’s a lot that can get stuck in your teeth in a salad.
- Broccoli - It’s also basically guaranteed to get stuck in your teeth.
- Cheese - It can lead to digestive side effects that are anything but sexy.
- Finger foods - You may want to be more comfortable with someone before you eat with your hands in front of them. Especially when it comes to crab and lobster.
- Spaghetti and meatballs - The risk of getting sauce on your face and clothes is too high for a first date.
