In October, a new interim State Superintendent of Schools was named. Carey Wright is taking over Maryland schools, at least temporarily. She has however stated that she's in it for the long haul. She was a top recruit for the position as she's spent decades working in and around schools as a teacher and administrator, and then a nine-year stint as chief of schools in Mississippi. Since the pandemic, students all over the country have suffered a severe blow to education, and Maryland specifically has been plagued with a sort of ugly reign of the last State Superintendent of Schools, Mohammed Choudhury that created a toxic environment for staff and lots of friction with state officials.
