Keith Urban Teams Up With Pop Star Richard Marx For New Song

Pop artist Richard Marx and country star Keith Urban have teamed up for writing sessions many times over the years. The pair wrote some of Keith's biggest hits together. Their songs include "Everybody," "Better Life," and "Long Hot Summer."

But Richard says that not everything they write turns to gold. There have been many songs that never saw the light of day. This latest one almost suffered the same fate. Marx tells PEOPLE that they wrote "One Day Longer" pretty quick. It only took them a couple hours, but by the time it was done Keith was over it.

"We wrote it at his house starting at 10 a.m. and by 12:30 p.m., the song was almost done," Urban says of the inspiring song "One Day Longer," premiering exclusively on PEOPLE. "I remember Keith saying to me, 'Ricardo, I love this song but I'm really hungry right now and I hate everything when I'm hungry.' A couple days later, he was no longer into it."

For years the song sat on the shelf (or in a folder on his computer) but now Richard is ready to get it out to the world. He released it as his latest single and it sounds like Keith is on board with it.

"I sent Keith a voice note saying that I was putting out 'One Day Longer,' and he texts me back and he says, 'I have no recollection of that song, but it sounds really good,'" Marx laughs. "He sounded like he couldn't believe that we would write something so good together."
