Don't sweat it! We've got some great tips and tricks to help parents who have kids starting kindergarten this year:

- Make sure your kid’s prepared  - Check out your school district’s recommendations of what kids should know before they head to the classroom, so they’re as prepared as everyone else in the room. Believe it or not just knowing your ABCs might not be enough. Also, make sure they know things like bathroom etiquette, since kindergarten is likely the first time they’ll be going to the bathroom on their own and inform them about things like fire and emergency drills, so they’re not scared or overwhelmed the first time they happen.

- Speak up – Sure you don’t want to be a helicopter parent, but there’s nothing wrong with standing up for your kid when it’s important. For example, if your child has an allergy, make sure your school knows.  If you’re worried about your kid’s safety, meet with the appropriate faculty so you can feel comfortable that they know how to handle any special issues.

- Get involved – Yes, you want to give your child some freedom, but volunteering can be a great way to get involved in your child’s education.

- Don’t get crazy with lunch –  Teachers recommend packing items your kid can eat quickly and open on their own.  One specialist told “Today” that after getting to the cafeteria and finding a seat, your kid won’t likely have much time to eat, so the easier the better.

- Schedule wisely – At least for the first few weeks, your kid is likely to be exhausted after a full day of school, so keep after school activities to a minimum in the beginning until your child gets used to their new schedule.

-It’s okay to cry– There’s nothing wrong with a few tears from either you or your child. The first day of kindergarten is a big deal, and you don’t need to act like it isn’t.
